The Treasures I Hold

Some people ask me how it is possible to maintain my own mental health when I consistently hear the difficult and heart-breaking stories of those that I counsel. My answer is always two-fold. The first piece is keeping good self-care; setting up clear boundaries, meeting regularly with fellow counsellors and psychologists, and most of all, relying on the true Source (Jesus) for rejuvenation and guidance. The second piece is that I do not feel that the client’s stories that I hear are a burden; rather I take them in as treasures. I see them as delicate gems that I have the privilege of carrying and as heartbreaking as they may be, I feel so blessed that I get to hold them. I also get the honour of shining Light on them to show their true beauty. This honour and privilege is what excites me to keep doing what I’m doing.
